Coloring for Pre-teens

Question: My daughter is 12 years old and has been wanting colour in her hair for about two years now. As her mom, I don’t really feel there is a need, and really can’t afford the upkeep. Can you help?

Paula’s Answer: Through our experience this is becoming very common. We have seen kids as young as 7 & 8 years old that want colour in their hair. Your daughter will likely be persistent, and if ignored, could result in her finding her own way to colour her hair and potentially damage it. We would much rather we see you at the Salon where can discuss your concerns and what she is looking for her. She could end up at a weekend sleepover party using a drugstore box colour with girlfriends. There are a few concerns with drugstore box colours. There is no control over the application. If certain colours are applied, some are really difficult to colour over, and sometimes it can be hard to remove. When going lighter, a box colour gives an all over lightness, which would result in regular upkeep. You could be re-colouring every 4-8wks to cover up regrowth. In the Salon, we can customize the colouring. You can add highlights or lowlights, and we can blend these in so that as the hair grows out the maintenance is much less. Bold colours can be adding in this way as well. Select pieces can be coloured in funky bright pink, blue, and purple colours and placed strategically for less maintenance. Depending on the commitment level for you and your daughter, there are bold coloured clip-in pieces available as well.

Keep in mind, adding a colour shine, with deep conditioning can do wonders for your daughter’s hair as well. It will emphasize her natural highlights and look really good.
